Tent Tortoise ( Psammobates tentorius) Karoo, South Africa
Background
Wildlife
Conservation Services and Consultation (WCSC) are a group
of multi-skilled professionals with nearly fifty years
combined experience of conservation, education, wildlife
management and filming in Africa and the Middle East.
We specialize in reptile (especially snakes) and mammal
relocation prior to the development of an area that is
previously undeveloped, or contains wildlife that needs to
caught and removed. We have worked in numerous environments
throughout Africa and the Middle East, including forest,
jungle, savannah and desert.
WCSC are based in Cape Town, South Africa, and currently
has branches in South Africa and Caceres, Spain. We work
internationally and have many years experience in wildlife
management, conservation, training and filming throughout
Africa, Madagascar, Europe and the Middle East.
We have also been involved in a collection of projects over
the years spanning all spheres of environmental planning,
design, development and management.
Company Ethic
"Wildlife,
globally and in the Western Cape, continues to be
threatened by the erosion of natural habitat through
various forms of development: conflict with human
populations: exploitation for commercial gain: sport and
recreation (such as hunting), and many other sources"
CapeNature
Our defining characteristic is the enthusiasm
and passion we bring to every project. We have an genuine
excitement that we bring to a project that clients have
repeatedly commented upon; every time we find an animal
(especially snakes!) on a piece of land that is about to be
developed, and we are able to trap, capture and relocate
it, it brings a profound sense of satisfaction.
We are practical in our approach, meticulous in our
delivery and always infectiously passionate in our
principles.
In all of our projects the primary goal of sustainable
development is the forefront of both our and our clients
thinking.
"Sustainable development is
development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:
1. the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the
world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given;
and
2. the idea of
limitations
imposed by the state of
technology and social organization on the environment's
ability to meet present and future needs."
Twenty years after the Brundtland Report first
put forward the above initiative, the concept of needs and
the idea of limitations are never more applicable and
pertinent than now.

Community Work
WCSC staff has been at the forefront of a number of community awareness projects. WCSC senior staff was and still is active in running the reptile rescue in the Western Cape. Every year thousands of snakes are killed unnecessarily by the public; conversely around five people die of snakebite in South Africa.
Snakes are often the apex predator in any particular biosphere, and killing or removing them often has devastating results. There are around twenty legally permitted volunteers, who often put their lives on the line when removing one of the Capes 3 deadly snakes (Cape cobra, puff-adder and boomslang).
We do our best to educate the public after each catch, showing them that the world-renowned snakes of the Western Cape are not in the least related to that talking one in the tree in Eden, and would like nothing better to get the hell away from that large bi-pedal creature holding a sharp spade. As family, acquaintances and financial benefactors of our councillors are granted more and more pristine land in which to develop, the snake population is dwindling quickly. Many species which we used to encounter quite frequently on rescues are disappearing at an alarming rate.
That is why we owe it to our indigenous flora and fauna to relocate as many of them as is possible before development ensues.
Over the years we have conducted education sessions at Delft, Khayalitscha, Strandfontein and many other disadvantaged areas, to try to educate the people that the snakes get rid of the disease-carrying rats and mice that inevitably congregate around human dwellings, and that if they keep killing all the snakes they find, the increase in sickness is proportionate.
We are privileged to be involved in these projects and see it as opportunities, not only to stay aware of the needs and requirements of our local socio-economic environment but also to empower people to reach their potential.
